    How to choose pure honey

    08.02.2022

Honey is a natural product that has been processed by the bees. It contains 80% glucose, sucrose and fructose, vitamins B1, B2, B6, E, K, C, folic acid, carotene and 8 minerals. Honey has a beneficial effect on the body, it is recommended to use it for colds and to increase immunity.

Not natural or low-quality honey is obtained as a result of mistakes or frauds in its production and sale. Both beekeepers and sellers can be responsible for this.

Artificial honey is created during the evaporation of melon juice, watermelon, grapes, etc., as well as during the hydrolysis of beet or cane sugar with citric or other acid.

To increase profits, unscrupulous sellers can add to it not only sugar syrup, but also flour, chalk, starch and sawdust.

By buying low-quality honey, you can`t to strengthen your health, but even harm it.

How to choose the right honey

To buy natural high-quality honey that will benefit your health, you need to know its features. There are several proven ways that will help you evaluate honey and distinguish a real product from a fake.

    Visual evaluation of the product

It is very difficult to determine the quality of honey by color, since different varieties have different colors. For example, buckwheat honey will be dark in color, and linden honey will be light. However, it should be remembered that the white shade of the product may indicate that bees were fed sugar.

Natural honey in a liquid state can be 1-2 months after harvesting, which takes place from July to September. By November-December, honey becomes thick (with the exception of acacia). Therefore, if liquid honey is sold in the middle of winter, there is a high probability that it is either not natural or melted. Note that honey loses a large number of useful properties when it is heated more than 50 degrees.

The consistency of honey should be homogeneous, without impurities. If there are incomprehensible clots in the product, it is better not to buy this honey. It is also better to abandon the product with honeycomb particles and bee remains.

It is worth paying attention to what honey is sold in. Since it has oxidizing properties, therefore it cannot be stored in a metal container. It should be glass, clay or plastic.

If the honey has started to foam, this is a sign that the product has fermented, and natural honey is not prone to fermentation. It should be no liquid on the surface, because this may indicate improper storage, or that the product is fake.

    Taste properties

The presence of impurities in honey immediately affects its taste, so you should pay attention to such signs:

    • pure honey dissolves evenly on the tongue without crystals and powdered sugar
    • after eating high-quality sweets, the throat begins to tear a little
    • unripe or fermented honey has a sour taste
    • incorrectly stored honey has a bitter taste
    • the caramel taste may indicate that the product was heated
